What Is Polyolefin Elastomer

  • Polyolefin Elastomer (POE) is a random copolymer elastomer based on butene or octene copolymer as comonomer, which is polymerized under the action of homogeneous metal catalyst. POE Elastomer randomly introduces long branches into the linear short-chain branched structure of the polymer, so that the resin phase formed by the polyethylene segment itself and the non-crystallized octene segment form a random configuration structure. The physical cross-linked network constructed by the cherry-like micelle crystals in the structure enables POE chemical to obtain excellent elasticity without chemical cross-linking.

What Are Main Applications of POE Polyolefin Elastomer

The largest application area of polyolefin thermoplastic elastomers is the automotive industry. In automotive exterior parts, they are mainly used in bumpers, radiators, chassis, body panels, wheel guards, movable roofs and other protective strips, windshield strips, etc. In interior parts, they are mainly used in instrument panels and interior panel skins, airbag outer skin materials, etc.

Another important field of polyolefin thermoplastic elastomers is the wire and cable industry, which is used to make insulation layers and sheaths with high environmental resistance and heat resistance requirements, as well as electrical molded parts.

Thermoplastic Polyolefin elastomers can also be used to make hoses, conveyor belts, tape products, machine tools, household goods, toys, entertainment and sports goods, soles, seals, hot melt adhesives and other fields.

The main characteristics of POE Polyolefin Elastomer are its low hardness, low density and high toughness. Polyolefin resins are usually used in composite applications. They can improve the impact properties and flexibility of polypropylene or polyethylene-based compounds. Meanwhile, they can also be used alone to produce molded or extruded parts with high flexibility and softness.

POE has good mechanical properties and processing properties. It has both the thermoplasticity of plastics and the elasticity of rubber, and has good affinity with polyolefins. It is an effective impact modifier for polyolefin resins.

The soft chain curling structure of octene and the crystallized ethylene chain as physical crosslinking points make it both excellent toughness and good processability.

There are no unsaturated double bonds in the POE molecular structure, and it has excellent aging resistance and weather resistance.

POE has a narrow molecular weight distribution, good fluidity, and good compatibility with polyolefins.

Good fluidity can improve the dispersion effect of fillers and also improve the weld mark strength of products.

With the increase of POE content, the impact strength and elongation at break of the system are greatly improved.

As a toughening material, POE has the characteristics of small addition amount, obvious toughening effect, and little effect on the performance of the base resin.

By crosslinking POE, the heat resistance temperature of the material is increased, the permanent deformation is reduced, and the main mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tear strength are greatly improved.

The multi-purpose POE elastomer can exceed PVC, EVA, SBR, EMA and EPDM.

Some products with less stringent requirements for heat resistance and permanent deformation can be directly processed into products with POE, which can greatly improve production efficiency and the material can be reused.

Low price and low relative density, so the volume price is low.

Excellent heat resistance and cold resistance, wide range of use.

Oil resistance, compression permanent deformation resistance and wear resistance are not very good.      

POE does not require mixing and vulcanization.

It can be processed and molded using conventional thermoplastic processing equipment. The molding temperature and processing pressure should generally be slightly higher, and it can be processed at extremely high processing speeds.

It can be injection molded, extruded, or processed into sheets or films using a calender, and can be blow molded.

Products with complex shapes can be made using thermoforming.

Various pigments can be added to make different colors as needed.

Some manufacturers provide special compounding materials of various grades such as oil-resistant, flame-retardant, electrically stable, and electrostatically paintable according to the use requirements of the products.

Sometimes, in order to improve the processing performance and the use performance of certain products or to reduce costs, certain compounding agents (such as antioxidants, softeners, fillers, colorants, etc.) can also be added.

Scraps and waste can be recycled and reused.

However, the general mixing ratio does not exceed 30%, which has no effect on performance.

PP has the advantages of low density, high tensile strength, high hardness, high yield strength, high heat deformation temperature, etc. It is easy to process and low in price, and is widely used in various fields. However, the low impact strength and low-temperature brittleness of PP materials limit its application. Improving the impact performance of PP by blending with polyolefin elastomers is currently the most widely used method.

The impact modification materials commonly used in PP include EPR, EPDM, LDPE, EVA, CPE, SBS, POE, TPU, polybutadiene-1, styrene-butadiene rubber, polyisobutylene, butadiene rubber and natural rubber. Among them, EPDM, LDPE, POE and SBS are the most commonly used, and the addition amount is generally about 10%. POE is widely used in the automotive industry with its excellent performance and good affinity with polyolefins. The POE/PP system composed of PP is widely used in the automotive industry.

With the increase of POE content, the impact strength and elongation at break of the system are greatly improved. It can be seen that POE has an excellent toughening effect on PP and has good compatibility with PP and activated calcium carbonate. This is because POE has a narrow molecular weight distribution, and the side octyl group in the molecular structure is longer than the side ethyl group. It can form a connection point in the molecular structure, which plays a connecting and buffering role between the components, so that the system can disperse and buffer the impact energy when it is impacted, reducing the chance of silver streaks developing into cracks due to force, thereby improving the impact strength of the system. When the system is subjected to tension, the network structure formed by these connection points can undergo a large deformation, so the elongation at break of the system increases significantly. When the content of POE resin increases, the tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the system all decrease, which is determined by the performance of POE itself, so the content of POE Polyolefin elastomer should be controlled below 20%.          

After adding Polyolefin elastomer, the melt index of the system increases. POE itself has good fluidity, and its addition also improves the fluidity of the entire system. When the POE content exceeds 15%, the melt index of the system has basically not changed. If the fluidity of the system is to be further improved, POE can’t be completely relied on.
